I would say that you have taken a really good swing at this difficult image and you should feel good about that.  I have noticed that you seem to be adjusting the brightness curves in L and HSB to try to match the histogram.

The histogram is a representation of the pixels in the image but not necessarily the "road map" to the image. you will have much better success with adjusting to the image rather than the histogram, doing so really over adjusts the image and changes the contrast overall.  Most times the brightness only needs a slight tweak and not a hammered down approach.  I would suggest you turn off the histogram in CM and see how your adjustments change.

to do that:  see shot1

click on the little green arrow in the upper right of the curve window.
Select:  Option>curves>histogram>  The remove the check from the show histogram marker.

I think if you cannot see them they will not influence your choices. 
Let's try this for a while and see where you get.

To find your way around on the curve after turning off the histogram you can place the mouse on the image and look at the curve window.  The "Color Worm" will show you what parts of the curve you need to adjust.
