I am new at curves and would like to know if there is a formula for
where in the curve you should be moving in order to achieve your
goal in correcting your picture.
I hope I am explaining it correctly

Yes, there are a number of ways to do this, and we'll be covering them all.

Usually what I do is move the mouse over the area that I want to change, and see where the color worm is on the curve.  That's the part of the curve that will have the most effect on the area.  There will be several examples of this on the videos for last week, which will be available in the next few minutes.
