Yes, it is a lot harder to adjust the colors with a pin active in Lab (or any other color space for that matter).
It's easier if you click on the pin icon in the lower right corner to un-pin the pin. Then you can adjust the endpoints of the a and b curves to get a good compromise between the neutrals and the skin tone.
