Mike,

In the first shot, the Highlight threshold of the L curve has no mask on the first adjustment. 

If I move the edge as shown, the brightness changes but I do not get a threshold mask.  I can even move it right back after letting it go.  But if I do anything else and re-do, the threshold the mask is in place.  The same is true more or less for the shadow side. If it is the first adjustment.

Second shot is the difference between the cursor and the threshold line on the curve.  I have to be careful where I look when I adjust since the Line is trainling the adjustment.
