I let Curvemeister set the shadows and highlights for me and preferred the Lab version over RGB.

Not bad at all.  I like this one too.

This is a curves class, but I have to mention that one thing that I would try immediately on this image is unsharp mask with a radius of about .6, and a percentage of 125 or more - this will bring out the detail in the fur.

Thanks, I'll try that.  On other versions of this image I have worked with, I have applied the unsharp mask.  I just didn't think to do it on the images I submitted for this class.

You're right - in general for the class it's better to stick with curves, but I had to mention USM for this image because it would make such a difference.

We really have never ruled out using things like USM.  We just prefer that you use the CM tool so we can help you there.  Part of the class is integration to your workflow...so feel free to use any tools you feel you need to to make your images look the best.
