A conundrum: how white is a white car?

Hi Art,

I try the neutral point on my LR-Version, but plays there much to much before.
Can't do that to the people and lower the opacity. Looking still ill, streets's still too yellow and no white car.
I have to start from the beginning.

Topaz Detail is one of the programs I use often. Hate the preview, but great program.

Do you have a online gallery. I would love to see some of your own pictures.

didn't find out what you mean.
Picture is still underexposed. Am I blind? Where can I bring in more black?
Rather want to bring it out.

When I looked at the image the shadows only...looked incomplete.  you are not blind...When you bring up the shadows as far as you did in this image you can get incomplete shadows.  The quick fix is to go to CMYK and tweak only the shadow end of the K channel to add some black directly back into the image.  I use K because it is a subtle channel when it comes to this kind of adjustment.

I look at the picture today for one hour and thought: What is he mean?
Thought you were kidding to me  ;).
Everything I try in the K-channel makes the picture only darker.
Would be great, when you explain it by time on an example. I'm overchallenged to see it by myself, but sounds important.

Yes, I can see that the hues are not quite what you're aiming for. A valiant effort nevertheless! I'm looking forward to seeing your next version.
By the way, have you tried Topaz InFocus? You can sometimes obtain even more subtle sharpening than with Detail, if needed.

I've just opened a Flickr account, and am uploading photos to it. I've only uploaded two so far, but I'll have a more representative collection uploaded in the next week or two and will let you know. I appreciate your asking!

First in CM in RGB did Shadow highlight and neutral in PS Dans Bigger hammer and then Dans Shadow/Highlight. Back to CM in Lab Did neutral of clouds right, Shadow and Hightlight (one that is significant) thus white shirt of gentleman right. Have'nt done any noise reduction or sharpening. Total time, about 2 minutes

The car is whiter than your image shows.  you have great shape but the whites are way too dark...

I re-looked at this on my primary monitor...I was working from a laptop earlier...It is in a better place than my laptop shows it. 

The K channel can help you in situations where you have opened the shadows with very strong curve moves or actions.  In general you will see blue or muddy blue shadows kind of like the deep shadows int he Hawaii picture.  in these cases the K channel can complete the shadows...
That is what I thought I was seeing...obviously not on my primary monitor...sorry to wild goose chase you...

Here is my third try. Road is a little bit more grey, car a little bit whiter.
Maybe I try one more color correction ;-)
Instead of false profile I use gamma correction from an exposure-layer.
Must be the same. Or not?

I have to try this on the canyon-picture.
I know that problem with the laptop-screens. Only work on that and surly need a better monitor ;-)


Hi Art,

I annoyingly only buy Topaz Details, Adjust and Clean. Never use the last ones.
InFocus looks great. I have to checkout the trial version and compare to LR and PS methods.
Or maybe we can compare it here in the class!?

Hm, I don't know, if I can wait one or two weeks for seeing your pictures.
