So...How Do you know...??

One of the questions Art has raised is "How do you know where to adjust the curve?" 

While this may seem like a simple question the answer can become hard to describe accurately without some lengthy discussion. 

I am opening this thread so that you have a place to ask the "how do you know?"  type questions.  These questions might not be associated with a particular image but may be very important.  I want to get them out of the individual postings so that you can access the information without trying to remember which image thread the answer was posted in.

I've noticed that you have your curves reversed to mine.  I have always used Levels and the white was on the right and the black was on the left.  Is there any advantage to having them the way you have yours?

There is really no advantage one way or the other...I have always used Exposure curves this way.  When I did process control the test strips always had the shadows on the right.  The exposure curve was always built up from left to right and therefore I always think of it that way.  <old habits die hard... ;) )

If you like the curves set up as opposite to that you certainly can.  Just invert any curves I post in screen shots. The ACV files I post will take care of themselves. 

So, if my curve drops in the middle yours would have to lift in the middle....
