I happened to be on an old Submarine in San Francisco bay last weekend, and photographed a copper id plate on a generator, made by the Electric Boat Company. This company later made the first nuclear submarines, but in the 40's they worked on more humble implements.
The goal here is to make the letters on the plate easier to read, using any means at your disposal.

Here are a couple of attempts.
In the first one, I used Lab and took all the color out by sliding the master slider all the way to the left. Then I rotated the L channel to increase the contrast.

In the second, I did two passes. First I went into HSB and rotated the B channel to get the best effect I could observe. Then I went into Lab and did a fairly radical S-curve in the L channel.

I'm not sure which, if either, works best.
