After a note from Joe, I'd like to experiment with changing the default shadow and highlight points. This will open up the shadow and highlight detail a bit.
To do this, click on Curvemeister's wrench icon, then on the Preview tab, and fill in the Shadow and Highlight targets as shown in the accompanying screen shot.
Experiment - let's change the shadow and highlight default values
Sure - the idea of setting the shadow and highlight this way is to give a bit more room for detail outside of the shadow and highlight. This places the shadow and highlight in a slightly more functional area of the display device, and will also show texture more effectively.
These defaults are perhaps more relevant for printed material than for display only images. I've been thinking about making these these values the defaults for some time, and would be interested in your reactions.

Indeed! When spoken about highlight and shadowpoint, you told us always manipulate with the point a little bit so that you can see the details.
Indeed I can see the details so long I am playing with the points around.
But afterward , I do not see the details. And that should be also the goal! Certain in the highlights, or not ?

The detail can be difficult to see, depending on the adjustment of your monitor. For example, the curvemeister bar pattern has just 16 levels in it, and most monitors are just barely able to distinguish the darkest and lightest square, which means shadow detail around zero will be almost impossible to see.
I often see students move the endpoints of the curve vertically, and I think that is an effort to get the darker areas into the visible range.
This is one reason for the 10, 245 recommendation for shadow and highlight. The new settings should give you a bit more detail in the shadows and highlights of the final image. Perhaps we should set them even higher - 16 and 234 for example.

I do see the 16 squares. The darkest 2 is the differences hardly to see, but it is there.
I always calibrate my monitor about once a month. For a week ago, i had to do that. So ik will do that before the next session starts.
I think i set to day these 2 points for shadow and highlight. I start with 10 and 245 . See what it does.
thanks!
