I used the Light channel of Lab and also placed a Highlight to get the paper white and contrasty.

This is my RGB version and althoug I placed a highlight in the same position as in Lab, the newspaper does not show as clean white as Lab.

The LAB version looks over all white certainly...Do you show the Composite RGB curve in CM when you are in RGB?  Shot 1.  Composite is the Grey square.  You can use this sometimes to adjust overall contrast in the image and to boost specific areas.  Using the Composite curve in this instance would be OK since the paper is white.  you do need to use caution when using the composite curve because you can create color cast quite easily this way.
