Yes Julie. There are different types of dedicated macro lenses and some can give you magnification as well

Hi Julie,
My Nikon 105 can focus down to 13.1 inches. the focal length is fixed so i can get 1:1 in the frame for image ratio. The flowers were cropped but only about 20%.
When used at normal distances the 105 is a proper portrait lens for head and shoulders shooting with a really nice bokeh effect.
In a sense you are double dipping but the lens is designed for this.

Julie, I'm not sure about Nikon lenses, but for example look at: Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 Macro Lens (1-5X) and it will give you a good idea
