The parts that came out purple here were what I set as the neutral:

I'm not convinced by either of these, necessarily, especially the first one -- but it seems like you have to sacrifice some brightness to avoid the artifacts:

can you post these as separate threads so I can comment in line with you? I know it's more trouble but the end result is easier to relate to. For instance I want to work with you on the spheres and the Ellis Island images but do not want to mix the discussion as we cross communication paths.

Ah, ok -- sorry, I can see how that could get confusing Am at work now but will do this tonight, and if there's time will re-do the other small images. I thought they were small because they were examples, but when I showed Art what I'd done he said they weren't supposed to be like that, which probably should have been obvious to me.
