Followed directions outlined but could not seem to get too much of the brightness out of the moth's head.

Try setting a highlight point on the moths head. Pick what you think is the brightest spot and right click, choose "set highlight" and then click on the marker in the image. If there are big areas of whiteness move the point around by dragging it until you have reduced the white areas to just a scattered amount.
Once you have that you should also check the shadow...It looks good but yo might want to revisit it...
