I also chose LAB and threashold to set highlight and shadow. I particularly prefer to use LAB because I can set the saturation slider to increase the intensity of color according to my taste. If I used RGB, I don't have the choice of the saturation slider.

These types of images are much easier in LAB.  Good job by the way on the image...
If you want to do the same thing in RGB you have to adjust the color curves to the same amout for each curve.
