Used same basic method -- CM in lab, adjusted light and dark thresholds, adjusted saturation slider, sharpened with unsharp mask.

Question -- if I generate curves in lab mode and switch into RGB do the curves get "translated" into the new viewing space?

No -there actually is no way to translate the curves.  However, if you set a shadow, highlight, and neutral point on the image, these will be carried over to the new viewing space.
