I used the Lab result for this one, too, for the same reason.  I felt that the RGB version was over saturated here, too.

No problems here with setting the highlight.  You're correct about the saturation issue with RGB.  Here's a further puzzle if you're interested - what happens with the first two images when you set the shadow or highlight in HSB mode?
