I'm taking you at your word Greg!
I started with violent rgb curves on a duplicate layer

(couldn't determine any neutral point)
and then set the blend mode to Luminosity
Added a touch of Local Contrast (25 pixels)
Then whammed in some lab sat - giving this...

blowing a few highlights which I thought were not important for this image.
I quite like the overall effect, but really think it is a big cheat - although I must confess that the idea of doing the luminosity in rgb (one has more control) and then moving to lab to colourise seems to work pretty well.
