the first photo is the  Caroussel with the wizard.
the second, stepped out and  the rest I did it with LAB.

Frits, I think you might have gone too far in the second one...there is too much shadow brightness and the overall imge lacks contrast.  you might want to take another run at that...

Greg,
when I  experiment wit the photo with the metalic balls, then there is a small strange thing.
You place a white point on a ball.
then you can move the whitepoint on the ball to see the effect of it.
You see there are a lot of white around it.
But when I not place a whitepoint, and do it on the other way with the shifting of the curve to the left, then I have learned in earlier lessons that you reach the right point when you see the first white spikes.
so it looks to me better the last way.
I can't manage the whitepoint on a way that I get the same result with shifting the curve.

I have tried to catch all in a picture, but it will not succeeded. So you mus trie it yourself.

A funny thing happens on the way to the solution to the balls.  You find color in a seemingly black and white image...this might be what is messing you up...there is actually color in the image...

Give it another go...

This example , i had before,
I could look at the old results, also what mike has made of it.
I have not done also.
But I remember, that mike has a more satisfied result.
I have spent not much time on this.
Switching to RGB gives a better result.
But I nearly always work in Lab mode.

As I am sure you remember, there is still much more in there for colors.  I can appreciate the time you have put into this so far...if you feel you want to take another run at this give it a shot and post it back...

I did it with the wizard, but used the RGB mode.
I could make the sky more blue, but for this moment, I do not know it.

Frits

Not too bad fritz...We will be able to make the sky much bluer later on...hang in there...

For the duck your image looks good.  You seem to have picked up a bit of a green cast but nothing to worry about at this point.  We really are just getting the shadow/highlight /neutral drill going here...

Greg

Greg,

indeed i have noticed that also before placing the picture on this place. I have calibrated the screen on 21122007 , so once a month I do that.
I do not have a other explanation.
I have noticed also that the interim example pictures  from Mike are a slightly different in color then  in comparison on my screen.
So, I will calibrate the screen ones of these days again.

Greg, here are the flowers.
Mike liked the pedal .... ?
so only threshold black and white done.
and bumped the colors.
the older pictures , like the balls and perhaps others, will I do again, when I have finished them all the first time.

Here is the Frence gift to amerika!
Used the threshold possibilities.
not the neutral. The sky is nearly a neutral.
after that I marked the face and make the statue lighter.
After that bumped the color.
Also i did a Noise Ninja on the picture.
All before that is in lab -mode.

Greg, here is example 7.
it was difficvult in the start, but thinking how to do, i came to a solution.
I placed marks on several points and make them a info.
so the mark point in the two must be a L 100- 0-0
I clipped the points from the 75 line upward.
then i put the 100 value in the  right compartment, right and down on the second curve picture.

Greg ,

example 8 goes in the same way but you do it twice.

Frits
p.s. picture 1 is the end-result.
picture 2 is half way.
