As for this image.  It looks like you did not invert the Lightness mask.  That would prevent the shadows from getting any of you r adjustment in the L curve to bring up the shadows.  See shot 1 below for the inverted curve.

Then you can mark the place on the curve where you want to adjust by right clicking on the spot and choosing "MarK" from the menu.  It helps to have a mark so you can see exactly where you want to adjust when you move the mouse off the image.  See shot 2.
