After fighting with this image way too long (contrary to today's advice), a BTN approach seemed to work best. I was not entirely successful using smart filters. When I went back into CM, the image had reverted to its original uncorrected state rather than reflecting the prior corrections in CM. Is this proper behavior?

You've done a number of good things to the image - I generally try for less contrast in skin tones, since facial features become harsh so easily and in this case the saturation is too high. The pavement still has a blue cast - using that as your neutral - generally sidewalks and pavement are reliable neutrals - will warm the image somewhat.
Smart filters have a "glitch". It is necessary to click on the yellow scroll icon in the upper right corner of the curves window. You can do this either when you make the changes the first time, or later on after you re-open the smart filter.
