I thought about a lizard's tail, but I decided the highlights are not that important to this image. I played around with the contrast quite a bit but just could not reach a better compromise between too dark and too washed out, Is that just this image or can it be significantly improved?

Brian,
You have done a fair job of getting the details back..they are pretty far gone...is there more sure...but you ahve to really work hard to get them back.
You got rid of the color cast, kept the skin tones in the people in a reasonable place and fixed what you could from the highlights...I think you are doing quite well...
