I liked your marquee tool suggestion so much that I thought I would try it out on this image. I first corrected the foreground in Lab trying to get a good shadow point and then trying to draw out some of the colors. I then selected the background and used the floating neutral suggestion in RGB.

Good job overall. Try resetting the neutral.

You have handled the image very well otherwise..shot 1 is your image and shot 2 is a different neutral setting on your image.
