Here are the bears. I found it difficult to get rid of the blue from the snout. In the end I accepted grey in the lighter bits and the hand was pointing to magenta for the darker bits but was quite short. Is that acceptable.

I like the lab one best it has more depth and vibrancy

Both versions look good.  the RGB bear is lacking in saturation and contrast but you noted that.  Both of those are Lab specialties.  The nose looks good and is well within any differences between our monitors.  Getting it perfectly gray is a moot point..your "acceptable" gray is just fine...

Personally my neutral is +/- 2 If I can get an image that close it usually prints very well.  Perfect neutrals really only come from a known neutral source like a paint chip or sample square in the image.
