I followed the instruction as for the mask, but I choose a different color - blue.
I played with the a and b until I got the desired result.

Nice Blue....

Trouble in paradise...red bleeds through to the shadow areas...Try softening the mask and seeing if you can bring the blue to the shadows as well...See my response to Julie regarding the mask hardness....
