This is my RGB version. I tried to keep the neck of the horses as defined as possible without going into blow-out mode.

This is my Lab mode. I prefer the RGB due to the lusher colours but I think I managed to get quite close with the Lab mode.

Your LAB version is in a very nice spot...try adding saturation to see if you can make the colors better. I think if you adjust the saturation slider and then just adjust the B curve in lab for additional saturation you might like the colors just as well as the RGB version.

For the RGB version you could bring the mid-tones down a bit as shown in the screen shot. this will add even more depth to the colors. You are getting much closer with the neutrals..Remember that in RGB you can have a color shift in both highlight and shadow ends of the curve so if you chose a darker neutral it might still allow a color shift in the highlights.
