Perhaps the saturation is still a bit excessive, but why not? It is easier in Curvemeister than the explanations in the Margulis book.

I think the Shadow needs to be a bit more open and that will help the heavy color feel you are getting...

Just the conversion to LAB and back to RGB is a separate set of steps for the Apple Folks. Not to mention creating a mask from the K channel....I could Rant on about that one...
