Working in LAB, I set the shadows and highlights but no neutral. I then increased the saturation and bumped up the dark end of the lightness curve.

Good job overall. one of the goals was to open the shadows. You did that and you could have gone further. I accept that it is a matter of taste, you might want to try a slight little "lizard tail" on the L channel in LAB.
It opens the darkest shadows a bit without losing the mid tones.
