I thought I would give this image a try.

to kill all the blue in the shadows would kill the sky.  I could mask or paint or ??

Steve...This one is a real tough image...
I would have thought you saw that last time in the September class...LOL

I would mask this myself...Use a red or blue mask and see if you can kill off some of the color in the shirts using HSB before trying to fix the rest.  Even half of it back is better.  Maybe do it as a color layer first and see if you can blend it a bit so that the exposure does not go all messed up...
Mask everything but the shirts.  The white parts can handle the de-saturation.  See if you can kill off half of the blue...

Final mask was lightness channel of LAB and some painting to recover some over saturation areas. 

Remind me to cover this one in the conference call..it is a real hard image and really belongs later in the class...

I can do this image 100 times and get 100 different results.

It was a toughie.  I do remember.  I hope I did it better this time.  I did my best without masks or local adjustments. 

As I keep doing these things, I get better.  I try not to use tools not available or not taught yet.  And no outside (non CM) applications.
