No tricks, only curves ;)
Problem for me was, that there was no range for contrast. So I use steeper curves on the flower and flatten them on the background. Find no neutral point, so I set one by trying to bring yellow out.

Nice,
Some minor adjustments maybe....
Brighter and more saturated...The neutral you see actually is neutral and it made no change to your image so you did very well on the color. Saturate only until you start to lose detail ten back off to your comfort level.

Are you guys upsampling your image when you post, or am I downloading the wrong version? My original is only 905 x 605.

From the class materials look for the "original image" link under the image Capture.jpg below.
Right click on the image and select "save link as" Capture2.jpg
This should download the original file for you.

Thanks Greg, but I'm still getting an image about 900 x 600, but you are Tanja are posting images of much larger dimensions. What size is the original image?

You have the right file.
My re-post is larger because I screen shot the CM interface as well as the image.
The Image data is shown below.

Set highlight and shadow, set neutral, then placed contrast pins on the central flower and rotated, then saturated, trying to retain as much detail in the central flower and flower on the left. Too "contrasty"?

Too much contrast?
It is subjective...to me yes, maybe...
I would grab the L channel at about 75 and brighten it up a bit...I love the Shadows and the highlights are still intact. Seems like the middle is the problem area.
You can choose to leave it alone...It's still in a better place than when you started.
