Layered image produces weird colours

I've got a PSD image which contains 3 layers. The top layer is mostly blank, and just contains the pixels which make up a pair of eyes. That's the image data I want to work on. Starting CM3, it comes up in Lab mode and the result is shown in the attached screenshot.
